Tell us about yourself with three adjectives

Giorgia. Direct, distracted, curious.

SF. From the IUAV and the ECAL up to FACTORY and your several collaborations with design companies and art galleries: What was the most challenging step that allowed you to grow as a young designer?

G. Surely the participation to Salone Satellite was a big stepping stone into the world of design because it opened me the road  to new adventures. It was a pivotal moment as it was the starting point of my collaboration with Daniele Bortotto who is still my business partner and co-founder of the Zanellato / Bortotto studio.

SF. When you imagine, draw and finally make an object, what are the coordinates you always keep in mind? How special must your creations be?

G. It really depends on the project. Basically, I really care that an initial concept is there, otherwise I cannot continue the project. I like reasoning on an idea and take it forward but I want to be able to go back to the beginning if I feel lost in the process. Then the form usually comes on its own.

SF. A young creative person but above all a young woman: which difficulties did you encounter when you approached the design world after your studies?

G. I have overcome the difficulties of the beginnings by now; I did not feel really considered, especially with companies and suppliers often followed by men. It was probably only my fear;  however, on growing up, I realized it was not true. It depends from case to case, but in the world of design women are not different from men, and this is very important.

SF. You know.. inspirations always come from unexpected situations. An anecdote related to the birth of one of your creations?

G. My mom sells favours and my parents’ house is crammed with knickknacks. Since it was quite senseless for me to have and sell
so many “unnecessary” objects,  I decided to make them the subject of my degree dissertation, from which the Narciso vase collection was born. Narciso was the successful project which then launched me into the world of design. Moreover, today my home too, is full of knickknacks. People change!

SF. A place, an artist and a film you feel yours!

G. The place is undoubtedly Venice, the town where I was born but above all the town that can always surprise me.
The artist is Dan Flavin.  I met him last year during my research for the Mirage project, designed for the Milanese gallery Luisa Delle Piane. But also Nico Vascellari.  I recently heard him as Ninos Du Brasil; I was really surprised but above all enraptured by him.
The film, I really don’t know. As I can’t concentrate for long, I usually get bored with movies. However the last film I found crazy was Suburra, which I saw three times in a week.

SF. Venice: the lagoon of lovers and tourists’ dream, and for Giorgia? How much do you owe to your home town and how did it influence your creative background?

G. As I said before, Venice has a very high value for me. It’s always a great source of inspiration for its history but also for its present. It is precisely from Venice that the collection that has established the link with my current working partner, Daniele Bortotto, was born.  Together we developed the project Acqua Alta, a collection of five objects inspired by the traces this phenomenon leaves on Venice. Moreover we  decided to work with artisans of the town, such as Rubelli for the fabrics and Salviati for the Murano glass.

SF. We SoapOpera girls like to call ourselves #busysexyeasy (or at least we try to!).
If you had to choose a hashtag that represents your lifestyle which would it be? What extra gear should a young creative woman have today?

G. #donttakeyourselftooseriously

SF. He who hesitates is lost, but it is certainly not the case with you! Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

G. I never thought of that! I don’t even know where I’ll be next year, let alone in ten! However this is a particular moment of my life, since I’m making choices, such as the recent decision to open a studio in Treviso with Daniele Bortotto. I hope to grow up with him, so this is something I see at least (hopefully) for the next five years.  I cannot think beyond five!

Giorgia. Diretta, distratta, curiosa

SF. IUAV, ECAL fino a  FABBRICA e alle tue numerose collaborazioni con aziende di design e gallerie d’arte: qual’è stato lo step più stimolante e quello che ti ha permesso di crescere maggiormente in quanto giovane designer?

G. Sicuramente la partecipazione al Salone Satellite è stato un grande trampolino di lancio nel mondo del design che mi ha aperto la strada verso nuove avventure. E’ stato un momento fondamentale anche perché il punto di inizio della mia collaborazione con Daniele Bortotto con cui collaboro tutt’ora e con cui ho lo studio Zanellato/Bortotto.

SF. Quando immagini, disegni ed infine realizzi un oggetto, quali sono le coordinate che tieni sempre a mente? Cosa devono avere di speciale le tue creazioni?

G. Dipende molto dal progetto. Di base ci tengo molto che sia presente un concetto iniziale senza il quale non riesco a proseguire nella progettazione. Mi piace ragionare su un idea che viene poi portata avanti e sulla quale posso tornare indietro se mi sento persa durante il processo. Poi la forma generalmente viene da sé.

SF. Giovane creativa ma soprattutto giovane donna: quali sono state le difficoltà che hai incontrato approcciandoti al mondo del design subito dopo gli studi?

G. Le difficoltà sono state ormai superate ma inizialmente, in particolare con aziende e fornitori spesso seguiti da uomini, non mi sentivo pienamente considerata. Probabilmente era soltanto una mia paura che crescendo ho capito non essere vera. Dipende da caso a caso ma nel mondo del design le donne non sono diverse dagli uomini e questo è un aspetto ed un valore molto importante.

SF. Si sa.. le ispirazioni nascono sempre da situazioni impensabili. Un aneddoto legato alla nascita di una tua creazione?

G. Mia mamma vende bomboniere e la casa dei miei genitori è ricoperta di soprammobili. Trovando abbastanza insensata la presenza e la vendita di così tanti oggetti “inutili” ho deciso di farne la tesi di laurea da cui poi è nata la collezione di vasi Narciso. Narciso è stato il progetto fortunato che mi ha poi lanciato nel mondo del design. Inoltre oggi anche la mia casa è attualmente piena di soprammobili. Si cambia!

SF. Un luogo, un artista ed un film che senti più tuoi!

G. Luogo senza dubbio Venezia, la città dove sono nata ma soprattutto la città che riesce a sorprendermi sempre.
Artista dico Dan Flavin a cui mi sono molto avvicinata l’anno scorso durante la mia ricerca per il progetto Mirage, disegnato per la galleria milanese Luisa Delle Piane. Cito anche Nico Vascellari che ho ascoltato recentemente in veste di Ninos Du Brasil; mi ha davvero sorpreso ma soprattutto estasiato.
Film non saprei. Avendo una soglia di attenzione molto bassa, di solito con i film perdo spesso il segno. L’ultimo film che però ho trovato pazzesco è Suburra, che sono riuscita a vedere tre volte in una settimana.

SF. Venezia: laguna dell’amore e sogno turistico, e per Giorgia? Quanto devi alla tua città natale e quanto ha influenzato il tuo background creativo?

G. Come ho anticipato prima, Venezia per me ha un valore altissimo. E’ sempre grande fonte di ispirazione per la sua storia ma anche per il suo presente. Proprio da Venezia nasce la collezione che sancisce il legame con il mio attuale partner lavorativo, Daniele Bortotto, con cui abbiamo sviluppato il progetto Acqua Alta. Acqua Alta è una collezione di cinque oggetti ispirati alle tracce che questo fenomeno lascia su Venezia. Abbiamo inoltre deciso di lavorare con tecniche ed artigiani appartenenti alla città quali i tessuti realizzati da Rubelli e il vetro di Murano realizzato da Salviati.

SF. A noi ragazze di SoapOpera piace definirci #busysexyeasy (o almeno ci proviamo!). Se dovessi scegliere un hashtag che racchiuda il tuo stile di vita quale sarebbe? Quale marcia in più deve una giovane creativa oggi?

G. Non prenderti troppo sul serio #donttakeyourselftooseriously

SF. Chi si ferma è perduto, ma di certo non è il tuo caso! Dove ti vedi tra 10 anni?

G. Non ci ho mai pensato! Non so nemmeno dove mi vedrò il prossimo anno, figuriamoci tra dieci. Diciamo però che è un momento della mia vita dove sto facendo delle scelte, come la recente scelta di aprire finalmente uno studio a Treviso con Daniele Bortotto. Conto di crescere insieme a lui quindi questa è una cosa che vedo per almeno (spero) cinque anni. Oltre i cinque non riesco a pensare!
